Post-MBA: a real life challenge

I haven't blogged since April 09. I was surprised that my story inspired some of MBA mom and dads who commented on my blog. I am happy at least I can inspire others to pursue their dreams.

For people who pursue a full time MBA program, life can be divided into three parts: Pre-MBA, MBA, and Post-MBA. They are so different in the way of emotions, stability, incomes, confidence, career opportunities, networks, friends, etc. For me, it is a big change for each stage.

Here, I just want to say, if you think MBA school is challenging, then you only pass one test. A real life challenge is in post-MBA. How to adapt yourself to a new career, new network, new level of intelligent, new colleagues, new corporate culture, new career inspiration, new life schedule, new living environment, new surprised high living expense if you find a job near New York, or other expensive financial districts. During MBA at school, people are nice, and understanding, encouraging, inspiring because everyone there is learning. For Post-MBA, we enter the real world, where there are no interpersonal skill instructors, free professional coaches, open-mind professors, and understanding classmates. You are all alone out there, if it is a new job, new culture, you are alone! Alone! Alone! That is a big challenge to adapt yourself to the post-MBA life.

I strongly feel that I am so lonely since I depended heavily on Yale SOM's all necessary coaches, career helps, EQ instructors. Suddenly, I do not have those close to me and no free service available. I have to say that I was exciting, and then nervous, and then frustrated in the past months. However, I am learning from where I fall down. Now I feel more relaxed after 8 months experience.

So, keep up your spirit and be prepared for post-MBA.

hey I think you're a great inspiration ! I'm an overseas chinese undergrad currently and planning to go to B-school later on too with SOM as one of my choices. I thought it was hard enough, but look at you, you made it even in the most seemingly impossible circumstances ! Thanks for being such an encouragement to me, God bless you lots in your career and family life ! :)

Your story is inspiring me to pursuit my MBA, I am a mom of a 1 year old girl, I am an immigrant with over 2 years in the US, looking for my dream job. Hopefully, a MBA would help me out with my career, and as I see, that would be possible, being a mom and a student.

Hi, your story is pretty amazing!!!

It encourages me to embark on my MBA application road. I think we have very similar background, engineer woman from China (probably from the same undergraduate school, I take a guess from one of your post). I'm also stuck into the current job and looking for a career change. If possible, could you give me some advice on how to stand out for b-school applications with an engineering background?

You made some good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people will agree with your blog.

I am an MBA mom too, with 2 kids, I work full time, and am in a cohort program at a lesser known, less prestigious academic college.

It was nice to see other moms attempting to pursue MBA alongside motherhood and its challenges (especially with a newborn). I had my baby the day after the first day of school started. My blog is http://mbamommy2two.blogspot.com/

great story lady
but i read your earlier posts and there you stated you had your own plans for job so didnt care about school not providing careerservice
but then at Yale you were sleepless about getting a job and all that through on campus service
shows how important school career services are...

Good luck!!!

I feel so encouraging when I found your story at 12:30 am! I was also an MBA mom but in a part-time program with a 2-month old baby. I have a full-time job at a technical company also. I am so hesitated if I should go on with my dream, which is having my own business in the near future.
Efficiency is most important!
Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi... it's really amazing that you survive it... I'm a mom of a 20 months boy and i'm planning for MBA, while working full time. Who took care of your kids when you're busy studying for GMAT, if I'm not wrong you sent him back to China didn't you? How about the time when you delivered in your first MBA year? Could you please kindly share your great strategy of managing time? Thanks much. Really admire you, you're a great inspiration... My email is tracy.nguyen.83@gmail.com... Please kindly help... I find it so hard to start GMAT now since only both of us are taking care of my son now without any helper

I can't believe I found your blog, although a few years late. Your story is very inspiring. I am also a mom thinking about going back to school for mba. But I have my kids right after college, so they are already 7 and 9.

We have so many similarities: I am also Chinese; live outside Philadelphia and 15 min from Wharton; got an engineering degree but I haven't used it. Instead I was a real estate agent and investor and have a few investment properties, which may not show much accomplishment on any MBA applications, and I am looking for a career change.

So if you don't mind, I just want to see how you like your current job? Are you glad you went to Yale? If you have the time please email me at philaproperties at yahoo dot com. If you don't mind I would love to ask you a few questions and get your opinion. Thank you!

I want to know more!! I'm half way through my program and its coming on recruiting season. I'm a single mom of two boys and have a lot to consider when seeking full time offers. I want to hear more about what life is like on the other side as an MBA mom.

Hi, I am exactly in your case. I will be starting my MBA in two weeks in UNC Chapel Hill and I am pregnant too. I was just wondering how I was going to manage things as I also have a seven year old boy and I do not want to neglect him too. To know that someone succeeded in the same situation gave me confidence.

Hey,

I am envious! I am also taking an MBA, part time, since I am also working. And it's madness, I tell ya!
Every 6 wks I will need to sit for an exam and at the same time, rush on my assignments. And I am a panic freak!

Feel free to read about my crappy stories here : http://carrotheadandapplemint.blogspot.com/2011/08/two-down-8-more-to-go.html

Cheers and stay happy!

That’s a very important lesson to be learned. Whether you do a one-year MBA or a full-time MBA, life takes a different turn when you go into the real world and it can be really hard.
